Are You a Free Agent? It May Depend on Your Age
Are you a free agent? Kelly Services recently asked that question of adults in the United Staes. Over 40% of employed adults now consider themselves free agents a larger percentage than before the financial meltdown of 2008.
Still the results varied by cohort with the over 65 so called Silent Generation claiming a free agent rate of over 65%. When the Baby Boomers were asked, it turned out 49% consider themselves free agents, a nearly 50/50 split. And, as you might expect Gen X and Gen Y were largely still employed by others.
Is this by choice or are employers showing a marked preference for younger, read oftentimes less expensive workers. Prior to the recession and the currently high unemployment rate, much attention was paid to the so called talent shortage that was primed to occur once baby boomers begin to retire. Does that expected talent shortage still exist? And how will companies begin to fill it?
