David Novak says that leaders need to recognize that they cast what he calls a “shadow of leadership.” And he says, whether the know or acknowledge it, subordinates emulate the behavior of leaders because they want to move up the ranks of the organization.
He says that leaders above all need to get honest feedback. “You want it and geneuinely mean it,” he says. He insists that its essential for leaders to create a safe haven for their staff so people can air reservations without recrinminations, important for healthy debate.
